In European tradition and in Waldorf schools, lanterns are created to illuminate an annual lantern walk, where each child carries his or her lantern and sings seasonal lantern songs to celebrate the festival of Martinmas. Saint Martin’s Day is a celebration held in mid-November and is centered on the life of Martin of Tours. It focuses on the light that can always be found in the darkest of times. The story goes that Martin the soldier came upon a beggar in the deep cold of winter with very little to protect himself from the elements. Without hesitation, Martin jumped off his steed, used his sword to cut his own cloak in two and shared it with the beggar. Martin went on to become a priest, and the patron saint of beggars everywhere.

In our own time and world, it’s important to remember that we have many opportunities to “cut our cloaks in two”, triumph over the darkness, and serve others in need around us every day. The world can be dark and full of turmoil, but we can be bearers of light and bring peace to those around us.  Simple acts of quiet service can make all the difference. Just like an individual person, our lanterns can seem very small, but the light they cast can be significant and bring great comfort!
